In the heart of the captivating rolling hills, lived a young shepherd. His being was essentially pure, and unsophisticated. His main role was to tend to his flock of rams.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind through the lone tree on the peak website were his main companions. Day upon day, watching over his charges inculcated in him a notion of tranquil contentment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. In one such instance out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome plot.
Stories of predators preying on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no wolf.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank laughed for a couple of more days. But, one noon, a real wolf did attack the flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is tough to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
